Start from the working temperature and dwell time — not the word 'winter'
A glove for a −20 °C freezer aisle, a 2 °C picking floor and a winter loading dock are three different specifications wearing one label. The buying decision starts with the numbers: the temperature range the hands actually work in, whether cold arrives by air or by contact with frozen product and metal, and how long a worker stays in it before warming up.
Walk the roles before writing the RFQ. Cold-chain sites usually contain several exposure profiles at once — a freezer picker and a reefer loader should not receive the same glove just because both jobs are 'cold'. Dwell time matters as much as temperature: twenty minutes in deep cold is a different problem from a full shift in chilled air.
Put in the RFQ: temperature range, contact-cold surfaces, dwell time and warm-up pattern, per role.

Decide wet cold or dry cold — moisture is what breaks insulation
Insulation works by trapping air; water collapses it. Reefer floors, frosted product, condensation at the ambient-to-cold doorway — most Gulf cold-chain work is wet-cold work, and a superb dry-cold glove fails in it within an hour. Where moisture is present, the specification needs a waterproof or coated shell over the insulation, not just more lining.
Be equally honest about sweat: in ambient-to-freezer cycling, moisture arrives from inside the glove. That pushes the spec toward breathable or quick-drying linings and a two-pair rotation per shift, so one pair dries while the other works. A drying rotation is cheaper than a thicker glove and usually outperforms it.
Put in the RFQ: wet or dry cold per role, waterproofing requirement, and whether you will run a two-pair rotation.

Specify EN 511 — and the evidence behind it
EN 511 is the cold-protection reference: three digits covering convective cold, contact cold and water penetration. EN 388 still governs the mechanical base underneath. Naming the standard is the easy half; the half that protects you commercially is stating the evidence you require — a product-specific test report, the issuing lab, its date, and the marking on the glove you will actually receive.
Ask every supplier — True Port Global included — for that evidence for the exact model quoted. Where evidence does not exist for a product, agree before ordering whether testing is part of the deal or the requirement can be met another way. An unverifiable '-30 °C rated' claim is a bigger risk than an honest gap, because it decides how long workers are allowed to stay in the cold.
Put in the RFQ: EN 511 and EN 388 levels per role, the documents required with the shipment, and the destination market.

Name the insulation and lining as a construction, not an adjective
'Thermal lined' can mean a brushed interior worth a few degrees or a heavy pile lining built for freezer work — and a quote cannot be compared to another quote until the construction is named. Specify the lining type, the insulation weight or thickness where you know it, and the shell it sits under: leather, coated synthetic, or a waterproof laminate.
The fastest route to a comparable quote is a reference sample: send the glove that worked — or the one that failed, with a note saying why. Partner factories can review a named construction against what they actually produce, and the exact build is confirmed per order rather than assumed from a catalogue adjective.

Protect dexterity, or the gloves come off in the cold
The commonest failure of winter glove programs is workers stripping thick gloves to scan a barcode, peel a label or key a terminal — hands bare, in the cold, dozens of times per shift. Insulation that defeats the task defeats itself. Chilled-room and picking roles usually justify a thinner, better-fitting glove; deep-freeze roles justify the bulk.
Consider a liner system where tasks alternate: a thin liner glove that stays on for fine work, under a heavier mitt or shell that comes off. If you run liners, size the outer glove to fit over them — and state the size mix from issue records rather than 'assorted'; cold-chain crews skew L and XL, but your records beat the rule of thumb.
Put in the order: the size run with mix percentages, the liner strategy, and a trial on the role's finest-motor task.

Test grip where the work happens — on cold, wet, frosted surfaces
Frost is a lubricant. Plastic totes, metal racking and crate handles that grip fine at ambient turn slick at freezer temperature, and a palm compound that behaves well in a warm office can stiffen and glaze in the cold. Grip is the property that decides whether cases get carried securely — and it cannot be read off a spec sheet.
Trial shortlisted gloves on the actual surfaces at the actual temperature: the tote, the rail, the strap, the frosted carton. Paid samples exist for exactly this. A sample trial that skips the freezer aisle has not tested the glove; it has tested the meeting room.
Put in the order: a working-temperature sample trial per role before committing the season's volume.

Time the order for the season you are buying for
Gulf outdoor winter demand peaks roughly November to February, and the stock that serves it is ordered in September and October — production takes time, sea freight takes time, and both sit upstream of your first cold morning. Cold-storage demand, by contrast, runs level all year and suits a scheduled replenishment rather than a seasonal scramble.
Treat any lead time in a quote as indicative until confirmed against the actual order and season — peak-season production and vessel space are exactly when generic promises fail. Orders start at 100 units, so a risk-controlled trial order in early autumn can validate the construction before the main winter volume is committed.
Put in the RFQ: the date stock must be on site and the destination port — and let the quote answer whether the season allows it.

Run the ordinary commercial mechanics — cold changes the glove, not the discipline
Everything that disciplines any bulk glove buy applies unchanged: paid samples before commitment, an Incoterm with a named place, a quote that restates your specification line by line, and costing per month of service rather than per pair — a cheap lining that flattens in three weeks is dear at any price, and a two-pair rotation doubles the count you order.
